The party performing it can be internal auditors, a public accountant at a public accounting firm (KAP), or the tax authority, depending on the purpose.

An audit of financial statements by a public accountant aims to increase the confidence of users of the financial statements through an opinion on the fairness of their presentation. That assurance is reasonable, not absolute. Internal audit aims to help the company improve governance, risk management, and control. The results of the the audit process are used by management, directors, the board of commissioners, shareholders, or regulators to improve processes and make decisions.

What Is A Company Audit?

An audit can be one way to see the financial condition of a company. This is because in the audit process, an auditor examines, matches, and analyzes the company's financial statements.

In a financial statement audit, the auditor expresses an opinion on whether the financial statements are prepared, in all material respects, in accordance with the applicable financial reporting framework. In an internal audit, the auditor provides assurance and consulting to improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance.

So, a corporate audit is the process of data collection and evaluation by an independent party of the economic activities of an organization or company. Independent here means objective and free from the influence of the party being examined. Internal auditors are independent in terms of their position in the organization, while external auditors are independent as outside parties.

Who Conducts a Corporate Audit?

A corporate audit is carried out by three groups, depending on the purpose of the audit.

Perpetrators

Focus

Basis

Internal auditors (employees of the internal audit unit, external service providers, or both)

Effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance; operational efficiency

POJK 56/POJK.04/2015 and the 2024 Global Internal Audit Standards

Public accountants at a KAP

An opinion on the fairness of financial statements

Law 5/2011 Article 3 and SA 200

Tax authority (DGT)

Compliance with tax obligations

Articles 25 and 29 paragraph (1) of the KUP Law

Assurance services such as audits of historical financial information can only be provided by licensed public accountants. Under POJK 56/POJK.04/2015, the duties of the internal audit unit at issuers and public companies cover examining and assessing efficiency and effectiveness in finance, accounting, operations, human resources, marketing, information technology, and other activities. Examples of areas that are often discussed separately:

Information technology audit: evaluating the company's Information Technology (IT) systems and infrastructure.

Operational Audit: evaluating whether the company's business operations run in line with policies and procedures.

Performance Audit: assessing the company's effectiveness and efficiency.

What Are the Types of Audits in a Company?

The following are the types of audit commonly found in companies. A full discussion of each type is in types of audits.

1. Internal Audit

Internal audit is an independent and objective assurance and consulting activity to add value and improve the company's operations. It is carried out by auditors employed by the company, external service providers, or both.

Internal auditors evaluate the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance, and can carry out special examinations when fraud is indicated, for example through fraud investigation.

Audit reports are submitted to company leadership and the supervisory board (at issuers and public companies: the president director and the Board of Commissioners). The results can be used to make changes or take decisions related to the company's systems or management.

2. External Audit

The external Audit is an examination carried out by an external auditor or a party outside the company. For financial statements, it is carried out by a licensed public accountant working through a KAP.

The auditor expresses an opinion on the fairness of the financial statements. Compliance with regulations is considered to the extent that it affects the financial statements; a specific compliance examination is a separate engagement, namely a compliance audit. Internal and external audits complement each other because their purposes differ. Some companies are required to have both.

3. Tax Examination

In Indonesia, tax examinations are carried out by the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) to test taxpayers' compliance with tax obligations. Its authority is set out in Articles 25 and 29 paragraph (1) of the KUP Law. Learn more at tax audit.

The matters examined relate to compliance with tax payments, tax payable, or additional penalties to the government. The term Internal Revenue Service (IRS) refers to the tax authority of the United States and does not apply to companies in Indonesia.

4. Forensic Audit

Forensic auditing is an examination used when fraud is suspected, for example misappropriation of assets or manipulation of records, to collect and analyze evidence.

How the results are used in legal proceedings follows the applicable rules and is outside the scope of this article.

5. Information Systems Audit

Information Systems Audit is an examination of information systems, infrastructure, and their risk management. The examination is carried out to assess system security, data integrity, system effectiveness, and compliance with regulations and policies.

6. Social and Environmental Audit

Social and environmental audits assess the impact of a company's activities on society and the environment. See Environmental audit for a more detailed explanation.

What Are the Benefits of Internal Audits for a Company?

Internal audit helps the company assess governance, risk management, and control, then gives improvement suggestions to all levels of management (POJK 56/POJK.04/2015 Article 7 letter d). Its benefits include:

Increase internal control: auditors recommend what needs to be improved in the company's operations, so that they run safely, effectively, and in line with the rules.

Optimize operational efficiency: auditors provide reports on what is already in line and what needs improvement, so that any inefficient or redundant process can be fixed.

Minimizing risk: auditors can identify risks that may affect the achievement of the company's objectives as a preventive step.

Improving legal compliance: auditors help assess whether the company's operations comply with applicable regulations and policies.

External audit provides a different benefit: it increases the confidence of users of the financial statements in the fairness of the statements.

What Are Examples of Internal Audits in a Company?

To get an in-depth understanding of corporate auditing, here are some examples.

Internal financial Audit: aims to assess whether financial records and statements are accurate and free of irregularities. Because KAP names and statuses can change, this article does not recommend any particular firm. Below is how to check and choose a KAP based on the applicable rules.

What Is a KAP and Who Grants Its License?

A KAP is a business entity that holds a business license from the Minister of Finance under Law 5/2011. The public accountant who signs the report must also be licensed; the license is valid for 5 years and can be renewed, and public accountants must provide their services through a KAP. A KAP must use its partners' names. A KAP that cooperates with an international firm may display that network's name after obtaining the Minister's approval, so the network's brand name is not always the same as the licensed KAP's name.

How Do You Check the License of a KAP and a Public Accountant?

Match the names of the KAP and public accountant against the KAP and AP Directory compiled by IAPI together with the financial profession supervisory unit of the Ministry of Finance (2026 edition, data as of 6 February 2026).

Also check the Ministry of Finance's official website through its financial profession supervisory unit. The name and organization of this unit have changed since 2025, so use the IAPI directory as the main entry point and recheck if the link changes.

For banks, financial services institutions, issuers, and public companies, make sure the public accountant and KAP are registered and active at OJK under POJK 9/2023.
